My problem of practice was to increase the level of my projects and activities in my new Intro. to baking and pastry class to meet the redefinition or modification level of the SAMR model.
Based on the feedback I got, I chose to focus on the project where the students create a video teaching the rest of the class a skill or technique.

Hello Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI really like this project! Right from the beginning I like how you created a video for the students to watch and then asked them to critique it. It is not too often that students are asked to critique their teachers.
Some thoughts and questions:
Have you thought about creating a tutorial for the students to use when they create their own videos? It could include things like the use of a tripod and lighting, etc.
I saw that you listed different programs that the students might use to edit their videos are you going to share this list with them, or make them search for their own video editing software?
When I read your last slide, how to give quality feedback, I thought that was a really excellent idea! We often ask students for feedback, but how often do we teach them how to do that? I would suggest that maybe that part be moved to the beginning phase of your project, maybe before they critique you, as this skill would be useful then as well as when they critique each other.
What do you think of inviting other teachers to view the presentations and critique as well? Maybe even upper level restaurant career students could also participate as judges and critique?
Will the students have any written component to this project? Maybe they could explain how they accomplished certain tasks, etc?
What about creating some sort of competition between the students, or between different classes? You could print certificates for your winners, or give them gift certificates for Raider House pizza, or maybe even a homework pass?
Since I have the privilege of teaching at the same school, please invite me to participate if you do involve other teachers. I think this project opens the door for your students to showcase what great things they are capable of, as well as building the skills of offering constructive and critical feedback. I am eager to see your final project!

ReplyDeleteFun! So many great ideas and uses of technology, I am not sure what else I can offer. I think it is great that you created a video first to show them of your expectations. Sometimes I struggle with showing examples so that I don't get so many "copy cats." But I like how you demonstrate how to critique. So many times we just "assume" students understand this but then they only say "yep, looks good."
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
What type of video cameras will you use? I use FlipCameras but not sure you can even buy them anymore. They were so easy to use.
Will you require students to create some sort of storyboard first? I feel this helps organize their thoughts before just diving into the project.
Will students be required to evaluate their group members on how well they worked together or participated?
